Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has promised to restore the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu cultural institution to its past glory.
Speaking at Nyakasanga playgrounds in Kasese municipality on Tuesday evening, Kyagulanyi pledged to uplift the face of the kingdom to regain its defined status. He also said that his government will set free the Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere and his royal guards.
Mumbere is currently battling more than 41 charges including terrorism, murder and aggravated robbery among others that were slapped against him and 203 royal guards three years ago.
Mumbere and his royal guards were picked during a military raid on his palace in 2016. And has since been confined pending the disposal of the charges against him.
Kyagulanyi also pledged to invest heavily in the mining sector of the district underlining that his government will revamp the industrial sector in the district.
He notes that the current government has neglected the sector with interest to keep the people poor.
Kyagulanyi also encouraged young people to use the election process as a platform to air out their voices.
Vincent Muhairwa, the LCII Chairperson Kahokya parish in Kahokya Sub County says that Kyagulanyi has tackled one of the central issues that are likely to determine how people will vote in Kasese. Muhairwe says most voters in the district want their King released.
Amina Kabugho, a NUP supporter welcomes Kyagulanyi’s pledge to free the Omusinga.
She notes that many people in the kingdom are bitter with the current government since it has remained tight-lipped on when he and the royal guards will regain their freedom.
Meanwhile, three supporters of NUP are nursing serious injuries sustained as the police tried to control the crowds that wanted to break into Nyakasanga playgrounds.
Heavily armed police personnel spent a better part of Tuesday evening trying to control the party supporters who had lined up along the streets and around the playground.
The presidential hopeful used the campaign to blame the brutality of the security forces that have been exhibited on his rallies.
Brian Basisa the NUP Kasese District coordinator blamed the security forces of using excessive force to contain the crowds.
