Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | At least 97 people mostly youths were on Friday night in Lira city arrested for flouting the night-time curfew. The suspects were arrested from bars, restaurants, joints and pubs.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson says that they will screen the suspects before charging them.
He strongly advised members of the public to follow directives issued by the Ministry of Health and the president to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As security, we shall continue to enforce those directives and those arrested will face the law,” he said.
Normal business had resumed in Lira with people moving beyond midnight while bars and hang out joints remained open to revelers despite the ban on the social gathering.
Lawrence Egole, the Lira Resident City Commissioner has advised bar operators against opening their businesses, saying they will be apprehended for violating SOPs.
Relatives of the suspects have pitched camp at Lira CPS awaiting the police decision. Grace Ongom, whose brother in law is among the suspects, has been at the CPS since morning. She is disappointed that they have been denied a chance to see the suspects.
Desmond Olong escaped arrest by running away from police leaving behind his brother. Olong is worried that his brother might develop more complications since he is undergoing treatment for ulcers.
