Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  A group of jobless youths in Moroto has petitioned the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the just concluded recruitment in the district. In their April 3rd, 2021 letter, the youth say the exercise was marred with nepotism and tribalism against applicants from Matheniko County.

“We are hereby bringing to you our grievance concerning the recent shortlist, which appeared on 27th of April 2021 conducted by Kotido District Service Commission. It’s our dismay to learn that our names were missing amidst the required qualifications yet the outgoing Moroto district service commission had listed us for the same positions” reads the letter that is copied to Moroto District LC V Chairperson and Chief Administrative Officer.

They particularly accuse Richard Lopeyon and the Senior Personnel Officer, Annet Akello for misguiding the district Service Commission. “They plucked off the necessary required academic documents from Matheniko applicants so as to deny them employment opportunities in their own district and shortlisting based on purported lack of the required qualifications,” the letter, which is endorsed by five bachelor holders reads.

Akello, who is denied of promoting sectarianism, has distanced herself from the interviews. “We were not allowed to be part of the exercise it was only done by Kotido district service commission since the service commission of Moroto board had expired,” she said.

Moses Lokoroi Suubi, who applied for the position of District Community Development Officer, says the entire recruitment needs to be investigated. “It would good for us to have lost the position a genuine way without being facilitated by other people,” he said.

Andrew Napaja Keem, the Moroto District LC V chairperson has confirmed receiving a copy of the petition. “We are going to follow this issue as the district council because it’s an offence for someone to be denied a job when they have all the required qualification,” he said.
