Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A Boda Boda cyclist in Katwe has been lynched for allegedly stabbing a police officer.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says that the unknown cyclist attacked and stabbed police constable Ismail Menjar, who was on duty enforcing the curfew on Friday evening.
Trouble started when the police officer impounded the deceased’s motorcycle number UDM2772M at Kibuye road Junction along the Entebbe road.
“The rider turned violent demanding for his motorcycle and stabbed the officer several times in the stomach and chest near the lungs. The officer sustained more injuries on the elbow, collar bone and in the neck, Owoyesigyire said.
During the scuffle, one of the locals identified as Masuddi sustained injuries on the head as he tried to intervene. According to Owoyesigyire, Menjah was rushed to Malcom medical centre for first aid. He was later, transferred to the Iran-Ugandan Hospital at Naguru in a critical condition.
Owoyesigyire explains that when the police officers returned to the scene after rushing their colleague to the hospital, they found that the rider, had been by pedestrians and other cyclists.
According to Owoyesigire, the knife that was used to stab Menjah was recovered at the scene.
Following the outbreak of the covid-19, Boda Boda riders were directed to stop operating at 6 pm as measures to stop the spread of the virus. They are also supposed to carry one passenger.
However, some cyclists have not adhered to the directives and the police have impounded hundreds of Boda Bodas across the country.
