Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Residents of Gongobe ward in Seeta town in Goma division, Mukono municipality are demanding compensation from National Water and Sewerage Corporation-NWSC for the destruction of their property resulting from the flashing of the pipes on the Katosi water project.

On Monday evening, one of the pipes going through Seeta town bust as it was being flashed leading to flooding. Water gushed from underground, damaging a number of properties and bringing business to a halt. The bust water pipe is found at a point where engineers had planned to release the flashed water into a drainage channel.

However, the pressure busted the pipe forcing water into different directions.

Although the engineers later managed to stop the running water, merchandise displayed outside and inside Florida supermarket was destroyed.

The water also destroyed property in over 30 houses and flooded Gongobe community access road. William Kunya, one of the residents wonders why the engineers chose to set up a water flashpoint in a residential area as opposed to a swamp.

Hannington Kabugo, a landlord in Gongobe is dismayed with the destruction of his apartments. He appeals to the contractor to assess the damage and compensate them for the destruction.

Donzela Mukamba, a builder says that water washed away most of the construction materials such as sand and concrete they had prepared for making pavers.

Although the water left behind a trail of destruction, Sam Apadel, the communications manager National Water and Sewerage Cooperation-NWSC says that they alerted the community through newspapers that they would flash water through the channel.

Katosi water project is under its final stages. Engineers are making inter-connection water tests before the project is officially handed over to the government.
