Teacher held in Lira over death of wife

Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Lira District is holding a 29-year-old man in connection to the death of his wife.

Licinia Akirapa Aweri, a 30 year- old community paralegal with Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum was discovered dead in their home on Thursday morning.

Boniface Aweri, a secondary school teacher at Kiryandongo High School and a resident of Ireda Shamba cell, Ireda West Ward Lira City East division was arrested after he told police that his wife had committed suicide.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson says that the suspect had earlier on reported a case of suicide but when the scene of the crime was visited by detectives, it was discovered that it was not suicide. Okema explains that the body was found lying down under the mango tree with rope on her neck.

Okema also says that one of the deceased’s children told the police the day before the mother died, the parents quarreled over money. According to Okema, the deceased blamed Boniface for withdrawing her money from the bank without her permission.

The quarrel then escalated into a fight between the two on Wednesday night.

The deceased body was taken to Lira Referral hospital mortuary pending post-mortem.
