Online payment system boosts revenue collection in Mbale city

Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The introduction of the Integrated Revenue Administration System-IRAS has so far boosted revenue collections in Mbale city.

IRAS is a web and mobile application platform that aids municipalities in the collection of local revenue from registration, assessment, billing, payment sensitization of taxpayers and linking the citizens to municipalities.

The system which was adopted in March this year has seen the city collect over 100 Million shillings in three months unlike in the past when the council has been struggling to raise local revenue.

In the previous financial year, the council suffered a shortfall of more than two billion Shillings in local revenue collections. It collected 900 million shillings out of a projected 3.5 billion Shillings.

While handing over office to the new Town Clerk of Mbale City, Paul Batanda, the former town clerk said that the new system will enable the city to realize revenue which has been its biggest challenge.

He says that through the system, they have managed to register the majority of all the businesses, which are major sources of revenue.

The new City Town Clerk David Kyansanku, says that Mbale City deserves better local revenue collections. He said that the revenue is bound to increase even more because of the IRAS system and called upon the business community in Mbale City to avoid paying money to individuals.

Kyansanku says that he will meet the leadership of the city to ensure they profile all the business community members within the city. He adds that there is also a need to ensure accountability of the revenue.
