Police arrests 12 suspects behind city robberies

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed report.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police have arrested 12 members of a group suspected to have masterminded attacks against unsuspecting Kampala city dwellers in recent weeks.

The group is believed to have led the infamous attack in which a gang of 14 robbed an Indian national who was riding on a motorcycle along Mawanda road. Reports indicated that the attackers took five million Shillings and two mobile phones from the Indian victim, later identified as Jiwan Lal, an accountant with Rigil Agro Peck Limited in Kololo.

After the attack which was captured by the Closed Circuit Television cameras-CCTV on Mawanda road, the police started a manhunt for the masterminds who have since been arrested in separate joint security operations conducted in different parts of Kampala.

Speaking to journalists in Kampala, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that persons involved in that incident were arrested over the weekend and he identified them as Asibu Takuba alias Stephen, Jimmy Sserwada, Gadafi Kasibante, Jonah Ssemanda, Richard Mulema, Sharif Akidi and Aloysius Ssewakilyanga.

The others were identified as Latif Mawejje, Salim Babu, Farouk Ssekaganda alias Sharif, and one Swaibu who allegedly has been accommodating and hiding the gang after executing robberies. Enanga explains that during the operations, a few of the suspects helped the police to raid several of their hideouts in Natete areas.

”We took few of the suspects and helped us to reconstruct and redocument the scene properly, on how they would plant their accomplices along the boda-boda stages and that is how they would get build-up as they are tracking their target and rob them at the most opportune time,” said Enanga.

During the operations, Enanga explains that they also recovered three motorcycles from the suspects.

Many such incidents have been captured by police CCTV cameras. The criminals trail their victims and punch them until they are unconscious before running away with bags containing large sums of money.

On July 15, Naboth Mpeirwe, a teacher was reportedly attacked by a group of thugs at the baseball court of Kyambogo University hitting him with a blunt object on the head which left him unconscious resulting in his death later on.

On July 18, the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu was attacked outside the Green Hill Academy school gate before taking her belongings including the phone, handbag among other valuables. Men riding on three motorbikes targeted the magistrate as she went to collect PLE results from the school.
