Mubende, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Magistrate court in Mubende has remanded a Congolese national for allegedly knocking a journalist dead.

Umar Muhamad, 34, a Congolese national and resident of Kyaka II refugee camp in Kyegegwa district was on Tuesday charged with six offences. The charges are reckless driving, causing death through reckless driving and driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving permit.

The others are using a motor vehicle on the road without a third party motor insurance, driving a motor vehicle in dangerous mechanical condition, and a motor vehicle without a prescribed registration number plate.

Muhammad was arrested after knocking Sabiiti Magembe, a National Media Group-NMG correspondent along the Mubende-Kampala highway at Namagogo weigh bridge.

He confessed to driving a motor vehicle without a prescribed registration number plate but denied five others. The Chief Magistrate Mariam Ninsiima sentenced Muhammad to one-year imprisonment on his plea of guilty.

Court heard that Muhammad was driving a vehicle without prescribed registration plates affixed in the prescribed manner.

She also remanded Muhammad pending investigations and hearing of prosecution evidence in the remaining charges.

On other charges, the state alleges that in September, at Namagogo along the Kampala-Mubende road, Muhamad drove a vehicle recklessly and damaged a motorcycle belonging to the late Magembe.

The state alleges that Muhammad caused the death of Magembe by driving recklessly a motor vehicle and that he did not possess a valid driving permit.

The prosecution also alleges that the motor vehicle, a Toyota Noah did not have third party motor insurance and the same was not in good condition and efficient working order and was likely to be a danger to other road users.
