Assailants shoot police officer dead in Soroti

Soroti, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Unknown assailants have shot dead a police officer attached to Soroti Central Police Station. The incident happened at around 7:30pm on Tuesday at Maroon quarters in Soroti City East Division as the officer was reporting for duty at the residence of Justice Alex Ajiji Mackay.

The deceased has been identified as Sgt. George Emuria, a resident of Angole in Kyere sub county, Serere district. Preliminary information from the scene indicates that the officer was riding his bicycle when the assailants shot him, grabbed his gun, and vanished into thin air before security teams could arrive.

Police cordoned off the area as they reconstructed the scene to commence with investigations. Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Region Police Spokesman told URN last evening that they were still compiling a report about the incident. “I am aware of the incident. Let’s be patient for a full statement”, he said in a text.

Stephen Ochola, the Serere district chairperson who leaves in the neighborhood where the incident occurred says that the area is of great security concern. Ochola says that area residents requested street lights and security cameras but the responsible authorities paid little attention to their demands.
