Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Vipers midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga has been named the best male player of the year in the FUFA Airtel awards. The winners of the awards intended to recognize the outstanding football personalities of the year were announced last evening at an event held at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
Byaruhanga who was part of the under-20 national team that won silver in the under-20 Africa Cup of Nations beat two other nominees including his teammate Aziizi Kayondo, and Express’s Erick Kambale. Byaruhanga said he was excited to win the award.
At the same event, Fauzia Najjemba was declared the best female footballer of the year. Najjemba, the top scorer in the just concluded under-20 Women CECAFA Championship where Uganda won silver, beat the Lady Doves duo of Fazira Ikwaput and Daisy Nakaziro to the award.
Each of the two winners received a brand new Subaru motor vehicle and a cash prize of 1 million Shillings. Meanwhile, Wasswa Bbosa was voted best coach of the year, Fred Musiime won the award as the women football coach of the year, Travis Mutyaba was named the Futsal player of the year and Fahad Bayo who plays for FC Ashdod in Israel Premier League was awarded as the Foreign-Based Player of the Year.
The Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah who was the Chief Guest at the event observed that sports, as a key component of society needs to get better attention from the government.
The last edition of the Awards in 2020 was not held because of the challenges brought about by COVID-19. Former KCCA FC player Alan Okello won the 2019 Award and Crested Cranes Juliet Nalukenge won the best female player of the year.
