Museveni, Stakeholders to Discuss Achieving Uganda’s NDPII Goals at KTA Symposium 2022
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | One of the highlights of the 5th KTA Annual Symposium on Intellectual Property and Technology due next week will be a practical session – a pitch competition for young entrepreneurs in Uganda’s tech space.
In front of key decision makers in the country, including President Yoweri Museveni, youth will showcase tech-based ideas addressing digital transformation and amplifying digital inclusion in Uganda. The most outstanding idea will win a comprehensive incubation opportunity, with the Youth Startup Academy Uganda.
“You can’t have big conversations without involving young people,” said Rita Ngenzi from Youth Startup Academy.
Ngenzi said the Youth Startup Academy helps Ugandans to bring to life the many ideas with solutions to help solve problems. She said they support startups in form of business development, technical support and opportunities to connect with global platforms.
The 5th Annual Symposium on Intellectual Property and Technology is organised by KTA Advocates (formerly Karuhanga, Tabaro & Associates) in collaboration with United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) . The two-day symposium is slated to take place at Speke Resort Munyonyo on 20th and 21st of October, 2022 from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
The event will host speakers, panelists, government officials, economists, lawyers, representatives from civil society organizations, finance and planning sector and academicians whose participation is vital to discuss the matters at hand.
The event is tailored under the theme; Achieving Uganda’s NDPIII Goals; How Intellectual Property, Digital Trade and 4IR can facilitate an inclusive and robust digital economy.
The chief guest will be President Museveni while other key invited speakers include Anthony Taubman, the Director World Trademark Organisation IP Division and Mike McCaffrey – Manager UNCDF for East & Southern Africa – Region.
This year’s symposium aims to facilitate dialogue between policymakers, regulators and relevant stakeholders to discuss how technology and intellectual property can be harnessed to realize the objectives under the NDP III. It aims to avail members and regulators in the technology and innovation sector with a platform to discuss the salient issues that affect the sector and how these can be addressed through legislation or policy.

The discussions will be moulded around four major topics, to wit: Intellectual property (IP), science, technology and innovation as drivers to an technologies, The Internet of Things (IoT) and Big data to achieve the NDPIII Goals; Achieving financial technology and digital trade in Uganda; and Commercialization of IP rights.
The 2022 symposium will accommodate a combination of invite only for physical attendance and online participation. To attend online, one is required to register via the symposium website; symposium-iptech.com. To enable all Ugandans to benefit from these pertinent discussions, attendance will be at no cost. However, for advocates to earn 10 CLE points, they will be required to pay UGX 150,000.
Other partners for this year’s symposium include Uganda Law Society Uganda (ULS), NBS TV and East African Law Society.
